Otjiwa Safari Lodge Review (A Relaxed Safari Stop Near Windhoek)
Otjiwa Safari Lodge: What This Area Is Like
Otjiwa Safari Lodge is located near Otjiwarongo, roughly halfway between Etosha and Windhoek, making it a very common final stop before returning to the capital. The reserve itself is enormous, covering around 12,000 hectares of bushveld and wildlife areas.
What makes Otjiwa different from places like Etosha or Okonjima is that it feels much more relaxed and accessible. Instead of focusing heavily on long safari drives or remote landscapes, the experience here is more about slowing down, enjoying the lodge itself, and ending the trip comfortably while still surrounded by nature. For us, this stop mainly worked as a softer ending to the road trip.

Things to Do at Otjiwa Safari Lodge
1. Game Drives and Sundowners
One of the main activities at Otjiwa is joining guided game drives through the reserve. The reserve is home to a wide variety of animals, including white rhinos, giraffes, zebras, antelope species, and many birds.
Compared to Etosha, the drives here feel much more relaxed and less focused on searching for wildlife independently. The guides know the reserve extremely well, and the pace is slower and more comfortable. One of the more popular options is the Sundowner Drive, where the game drive ends at a viewpoint with drinks and snacks while watching the sunset over the bushveld.
2. Rhino Tracking
Otjiwa also offers rhino tracking through the reserve. We actually did the rhino tracking experience ourselves and ended up being really impressed by the guides. What stood out most was how much knowledge they had about the animals and the environment itself.
Instead of simply driving around until spotting rhinos, the guides actively tracked them using fresh footprints and signs in the landscape. Watching them read the tracks and slowly narrow down the location of the rhinos made the experience feel much more immersive and authentic than a standard safari drive.

3. Walking Trails and Relaxing at the Lodge
One thing that stood out to us about Otjiwa is that it doesn’t feel rushed. The lodge area itself is beautiful, with open views over the bushveld, waterholes, pools, and outdoor spaces where animals regularly move through the landscape. There are also multiple hiking and biking trails around the reserve, which makes it easy to explore the area more actively if you want a break from sitting in the car during safari drives.
Staying at Otjiwa Safari Lodge
One thing we liked about Otjiwa is that the reserve offers several accommodation options depending on your travel style and budget. There are:
- campsites
- family chalets
- safari rooms
- luxury lodge-style stays
We stayed at Otjiwa Safari Lodge, which felt significantly more comfortable and polished compared to some of the earlier camping stops during the trip. What stood out most was how relaxed everything felt. Compared to the more structured safari rhythm in Etosha and Okonjima, Otjiwa felt more like a place to recover and slow down before heading back toward Windhoek.

Practical Tips for Visiting Otjiwa
Activities at Otjiwa usually need to be booked either in advance or directly at reception after arrival. Unlike Etosha, self-driving inside the reserve is not allowed in order to protect wildlife. Because Otjiwa is located relatively close to the B1 highway, it’s also one of the easier and more accessible safari-style stops in Namibia. That makes it ideal either as:
- a first stop after arriving in Namibia
- or one of the final stops before flying home
For us, it worked especially well as the final slower part of the itinerary after several weeks of road tripping.
Is Otjiwa Safari Lodge Worth Visiting?
Otjiwa probably isn’t the most dramatic or adventurous safari experience in Namibia. At the same time, that’s also not really the point of staying here.
For us, Otjiwa worked best as a comfortable and relaxed transition between the intense self-drive part of the trip and returning to Windhoek. The combination of wildlife, comfortable accommodation, and slower pace made it feel like a very easy final stop before flying home. If you’re looking for hardcore safari experiences, Etosha and Okonjima will likely feel more impressive. But if you want a place to slow down, recover from the road trip, and still enjoy wildlife and nature in a comfortable setting, Otjiwa fits perfectly into a Namibia itinerary.
