Trondheim
Trondheim has regularly been voted the best student town of Norway. With its 33.000 students, Trondheim offers a vibrant city life. Our exchange university (Norwegian University of Science and Technology) has its main facilities here, so that’s why Trondheim made it to the list of places we wanted to travel to.
Trondheim is also the home of beautiful cathedrals and churches and houses some important museums. Trondheim has a rich history because they housed major religious leaders and the Norwegian king in the 11th century. So if you are a history lover like me, definitely visit the historical pearls of Trondheim. Our first stop was the Nidaros Cathedral.
Just before the Nidaros Cathedral, you will find a center where you can buy tickets to get into the building. Good to know is that if you buy a combination ticket you can also see the Erkebispegarden (Archbishop’s Palace) and the museum that houses the Crown Regalia of Norway.
Nidaros Cathedral
The cathedral has seen some big changes in the past, and this shows in the architecture. The cathedral is beautiful from the outside and the inside, especially the windows of the cathedral are spectacular, just like the front. Fun to know is that the cathedral has been the coronation church of the Norwegian kings since they regained their independence in 1814. Also, the current King and Queen have been crowned here.
Erkebispegarden
The Erkebispegarden is a small museum right from the cathedral and shows original sculptures from the Nidaros Cathedral and archaeological finds from its dramatic history.
Crown Regalia of Norway
The most bling-bling can be found in this museum. It is a rather small exhibition that shows the crown, throne and other jewels of the Royal family of Norway.
Old Town Bridge and warehouses
Over the Nidelva river, you can find the Old Town Bridge, this is THE place to take pictures. This bridge gives you a good view of the old warehouses that are placed on both sides of the river, which makes it the place to make one of Trondheim’s most known photo’s.
NTNU
The Museum of Natural History and Archaeology is part of the NTNU campus of Trondheim and displays pieces out of the stone, bronze, iron and Viking age. The main building of NTNU is based in Gløshaugen, a building from 1910 that looks like a cathedral.
Tyholttårnet
Tyholttårnet is a 124 meter long radio tower with an observation deck. The tower has a revolving restaurant inside at 80 meters high which gives you one of the most beautiful views over the city. The restaurant is based on a platform and makes one complete circle per hour. So just forget the food and look outside, because you will see something different all the time. A big tip is: go dining during the sunset. This is a perfect end of your day.
Kristiansten Fortress
Just a few meters from our AirBnB was the Kristiansten Fortress. This fortress is the best preserved tower fortress in Norway. The fortress has a cannon tower known as Donjon and the museum in the fortress are open to the public. The fortress is on the east side of the city and also gives you a good view over Trondheim.
Market square
And last but not least do not forget to visit the market square of Trondheim. The square is the crossing of shopping streets, cafes and bars. It is the perfect place to relax in the summer or to shop for presents in december.
