Trollstigen – mountain road
From left, to right to, left again. That is how you drive up to the eleven hairpin bends on Trollstigen. Trollstigen is Norway’s most visited tourist road, and this masterpiece in engineering in the midst of majestic natural landscape will make your drive a true joy ride. The two-hour drive with spectacular views and sights that runs all the way from Trollstigen to the bottom of the famous Geirangerfjorden.
Trollstigen is a narrow road close to Åndalsnes and used to be an important transport passage between the villages Valldal in Indre Sunnmøre and Åndalsnes in Romsdalen.
When to visit?
I visited Trollstigen during my stay in Norway together with a group of friends and even when it is rainy you have a good view of the valley. Just like Dalsnibba, Trollstigen is closed during late autumn and winter due to snow. The road normally opens at the end of May and closes in October / November.
How to visit?
By car
I highly recommend renting a car if you are planning to visit Trollstigen. It gave us so much joy to stop along the way and enjoy the views. The Trollstigen is surrounded by mighty mountains that reach an altitude of over 1600 meters, so there is enough to see.
