The street art in Penang
Named Silicon Valley of the East by the locals, Penang is one of the most vital economic powerhouses in Malaysia and one of the country’s most urbanized states. George Town is part of Penang and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It’s a thriving tourist destination, so that’s why we decided to book a hotel in George Town. From our hotel Cititel Express Penang we visited the highlights of Penang. George Town is smaller than I imagined, so the two days we spent here were more than enough.
Penang Hill
If you love incredible views, Penang Hill should definitely be on your to-do list. We visited Penang Hill together with another Dutch couple that we met on the bus. The Penang Hill tram will take you up to the top and back for 30 MYR if you are a student. You can also walk from the top back to the station, which takes approximately 3 hours.
Tip: Take your student card with you, because there are quite some discounts at tourist attractions.
Street Art
Penang is the street art capital of Malaysia and you can find some street art every few streets, so take a tour or walk around hunting for street art as we did.
Food
Stop at My Own Cafe for Asam Laksa and a fruit juice, one of the best in Penang! It is highly recommended on TripAdvisor and is definitely worth the money. TripAdvisor also brought us to dessert heaven. Merry Me is a dream for dessert lovers.
Hawker Stalls/ Food Courts
Since we are talking about food, we also visited the Hawker Stalls or Food Courts in Penang. It’s a Valhalla of street food which is incredibly cheap. The Red Garden Food Paradise and New Lane Hawker Centre where the ones we visited. They have all types of food so everyone can find something here.
Little India
Like a lot of Malaysian cities also Penang has a Little India where you can browse through the shops.
Architecture
During our walk through the city we also encountered all kinds of different architecture. Like the Clan Jetties of Penang. The waterfront society is home to houses on stilts of various Chinese clans and fun to visit. You can watch a beautiful sunset at the end of the jetties and eat delicious ice cream from one of the shops!
State buildings as the City Hall and CourtHouse are a world apart from the architecture of the Shop – and Townhouse and colorful modern style houses in George Town. My advice; just walk around and enjoy all the differences!
