The colours of Melaka
Melaka or also spelled Melacca is a city just four hours from Singapore and the first Malaysian city I visited after crossing the border from Singapore. The catchphrase: “Don’t mess with Melaka” says everything you need to know about the confidence the local people have in their city. Melaka is known because of its historical city center that has been listed as a UNESCO Heritage Site since 2008. Melaka has lots to offer, from historical places to good food, places to shop and super friendly people. Since I am kind of a history geek we visited many of the historical sites in the city.
Historical sites
The city center kind of starts at what they call the “Dutch Square”. The square has a historical city hall, a museum about the history of Melaka and the St. Pauls church.
Shop
From there you can easily walk to Jonker Street or as the signs say Jonker Walk. This is the perfect place to buy local food, shop for Malaysian clothes, drink and eat something or just look around. If you are in Melaka on the weekends, visit the night market at Jonker Walk and enjoy the relaxed atmosphere.
Views
If you walk left from the Dutch Square you will find Menara Taming Sari. An observation deck that gives you a spectacular view over Melaka from a height of 80 meters.
Photo’s
All over town you can find street art in Melaka, most of the murals are good for taking pictures.
