One day in Formentera

Formentera is the smallest of Spain’s Balearic islands in the Mediterranean Sea. It has the most beautiful beaches, with clear blue water and all kinds of fun activities to do. It is easy to reach from Ibiza and offers many different activities for all kinds of people.

How to get there

Ibiza: From the port in Ibiza city is it possible to take a ferry to Formentera. Around every half an hour in the high season a ferry leaves. The shuttle service of Balearia or Trasmapi is rated the best and will take you to Formentera in less than 40 minutes.

Other: Most ferries to Formentera come from Ibiza, but it is also possible to reach the island from Barcelona, Valencia or Denia. The crossing is relatively short at around 3 hours and runs between April and September.

Traveling on the island

The port of Formentera has dozens of shops that rent out bikes, scooters or cars. On the Island would I recommend to either rent a scooter or car if you want to explore the island. With a scooter or car is it possible to go to the other side of the island. With this option, you will not lose a lot of time on just travelling. The main island of Formentera is just 19 kilometres (12 mi) long, so perfect to the bike. However, summer in Spain is really hot so be prepared to get sweaty if you take this option. A bike would be the best choice if you only plan to stay around the port of Formentera or the beaches in this area.

1) Cap de Barbaria

We took the ferry to Formentera around 9:30 in the morning and rented a car. From the rental place, we drove to Cap de Barbaria. Cap de Barbaria is home to a lighthouse and Formentera’s southernmost tip. It is well-known for the hiking trails and taking photos. The way to the lighthouse takes around 30 minutes walking from the parking place.

2) Far de la Mola

From Cap de Barbaria we drove to the other side of the island to Far de la Mola. Far de la Mola is the farthest you can get. Here we parked the car and walked to the mid-1800s lighthouse. The lighthouse is situated on a cliff known for its ocean views and a small monument to author Jules Verne. We took some photo’s and enjoyed the beautiful view while eating lunch at Codice Luna Formentera. The place is so relaxed and the staff is super friendly. In the souvenir shop on Far de la Mola do they sell all kinds of cute stuff. Check it out if you want to take something with you as a momentum.

3) Calo Des Mort and Playa de les Illetes

After lunch, we decided to check out some beaches. Formentera has some of the most beautiful beaches of Europe with its clear waters and long stretches of beach backed by dunes and pine trees. Since we just had one day we relaxed the rest of the day on the beach and took the ferry back to Ibiza around 6 PM.

If you have the time

If you have the time, try to stay a night in Formentera. The island has a lot to offer for such as a small piece of land. Staying the night would give you the opportunity to explore more of the beaches and sights; such as Estany Pudent, Torre Des Pi Des Català and Can Marroig.
