2 Day Itinerary to Luxembourg

February 26, 2022suzannevp

Luxembourg is one of the smallest countries in Europe with a large foreign population. The country has something for everyone from the city to the mountains. Maarten has fond memories of Luxembourg, since he spent many summers here. Since Luxembourg is just a three and a half hour drive for us, it became a perfect road trip destination. If Luxembourg is on your bucket list, I’d definitely recommend going there for a weekend. With that being said, here is the perfect 2 Day Itinerary to Luxembourg city and its surroundings.

Where to stay

Firstly and most importantly, the hotel! The Mercure Luxembourg Off Kirchberg is where we stayed. Luxembourg Off Kirchberg is somewhat on the outskirts of the city in the Neudorf-Weimershof district. With a bus stop right in front of the hotel, you are in the city centre in less than 10 minutes. The hotel offers parking at the back, which is great for those who come by car. There is also a bar, the hotel offers breakfast to guests and has wonderful modern rooms.

DoubleTree by Hilton Luxembourg is located in the same district, Kirchberg. It has an indoor pool and is close to the airport.

Hotel Parc Belair is located in the city centre and offers views over the Parc de Merl. This luxurious 4-star hotel offers a more old French money vibe.

Luxembourg Itinerary Day 1

Palais Grand-Ducal

One of your first stops should be the palace – Palais Grand-Ducal is home to the royal family. The grand ducal Palace is situated right in the core of the Old Town. This palace is only open to the public for certain parts of the year. Keeping this in mind, tours can be prebooked online or you can pick up your ticket via Luxembourg City Tourist Office. Tickets cost €12 for adults and €6 for children aged 4 to 12. Children under 4 can enter for free.

Luxembourg City History Museum

Situated close to the Grand-Ducal on rue du Saint-Esprit is the Luxembourg City History Museum. The museum shows the thousand-year history of the city of Luxembourg with both permanent and temporary exhibits. This lovely building is a mixture of old and new, ancient and modern!

La Passerelle

La Passerelle, also known as the Luxembourg Viaduct, is an eye-catcher on the southern side of the city center. You can walk over the viaduct for some breathtaking views.

Chemin de la Corniche

Chemin de la Corniche is the best path to admire the lower city of Luxembourg. It runs along the Alzette valley on the ramparts and gives a view over the river.

Bock Casemates

The Bock Casemates are a series of subterranean tunnels and passageways. Bock Casemates were part of Luxembourg’s famed defences, during the seven month siege by the French in 1794. These days, the Bock Casemates are open to visitors, who can wander through all the 17 kilometres (!!!) worth of tunnel passages.

Parks

Luxembourg city centre has multiple parks such as Parc Kinnekswiss and Parcs de la Pétrusse. These parks are perfect for a walk or a picknick when the weather is nice.

Luxembourg Itinerary Day 2

Castle Vianden

Vianden Castle, located at the top of the city of Vianden, was built between the 11th and 14th centuries. This castly is is one of the largest and most beautiful noble residences of the Romanesque and Gothic periods in Europe. Uniquely, the castle was once in possession of the House of Orange-Nassau from which the Dutch Royal Family stems.

Where to eat

  • Bloom Specialty Coffee Shop
  • Piri Piri Portuguese Restaurant & Bar: The place for some delicious Portuguese food.
  • TERRA Steakhouse: For al meat lover, this is the place to enjoy meals of excellent quality. While it is an expensive restaurant, the price/ quality is on par. If you are here try the wagyu!
  • El Barrio Restaurante y Tapas Bar: A great restaurant, that paid attention to the interior and exterior design. Friendly staff and amazing food and cocktails!
  • Amore: As the name suggests, this bar restaurant celebrates love, their love for food and cocktails. I would recommend eating some lunch here or enjoy a drink before dinner.

Other things to see

Luxembourg National Museum of Natural History

The museum shows eight separate scientific sections, spanning the natural sciences: botany, ecology, geology and mineralogy, geophysics and astrophysics, palaeontology, vertebrate zoology, and invertebrate zoology.

Bourscheid Castle

Bourscheid Castle is just a 45 minute drive from Luxembourg city center. This castly is the largest in Luxembourg and is perched high above the Eislek, in the Luxemburg Ardennes. The castle was built in the 10th century, and then extended in the 14th and 15th centuries. Then the fortress wall was added, flanked by six Gothic towers. This is definitely worth a day trip if you have the time!

Medieval Castle Beaufort

On town road 128 (Rue du Château), just outside of the town of Beaufort, we can find Castle Beaufrort. This Medieval castle started as a small fortress on a rock in the 11th century, after which it quickly expanded into a castle over the years. The castle has been opened to the public since 1932 by the (then) owner of the castle Edmond Linckels.

Philharmonie Luxembourg

The Philharmonie Luxembourg is a concert hall located in the European district in the Luxembourg City quarter of Kirchberg. This building is a beautiful piece of architecture that symbolizes music through a natural filter in the form of 823 facade columns.

There it is, a 2-day itinerary to Luxembourg! I hope you have the most amazing trip exploring this beautiful country. I cannot wait to be back and explore more of what Luxembourg has to offer.
