Verona the city of love

Verona is one of those cities that can escape your list of places to go, but once visited will be a place to come back to.

The city is all about old-romance. In Verona you can find the tragedy of Romeo and Juliet. I came here to see Juliet’s balcony and the Renaissance galleries, but was captured by Verona’s gardens, underground remains, churches and friendly people.

My holiday in Verona started with brunch at the Piazza Bra, Verona’s main square with restaurants. While sitting in the sun Maarten and I started to plan our days. While talking and taking everything in we decide to start at the unexpected auto show at the square, followed by a walk through the city and some delicious Italian ice cream.

The next day was a little bit less sunny (you can say no sun). So we visited Ponte Pietra,  a bridge from the 1st century BC.

Ponte Pietra is connected to the castle Castelvecchio. That was an important military construction of the dynasty that ruled the city in the Middle Ages. Castelvecchio is now the home of the Castelvecchio Museum.

Since the weather was still a little bit rainy we also visited the Basilica of San Zeno. It is said that this basilica was the place where Romeo and Juliet married. Inside the basilica it is forbidden to take pictures but the basilica has a nice garden that asks to be captured.

Verona is also a good place to be if you want to enjoy opera or other shows. From June til August you can enjoy opera, ballet and other shows in the second biggest Amfi theater of Italy.

Three of Shakespeare’s plays are set in Verona: Romeo and Juliet, The Two Gentlemen of Verona and The Taming of the Shrew. Because of the structure and architecture, Verona is listed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Last but not least is the food. Italy is known for their food so we could not leave without eating pasta and pizza.
