Leutascher Geisterklamm

Between the border of Leutasch (Austria) and Mittenwald (Germany) can you find Leutascher Geisterklamm. Leutascher Geisterklamm is the area where a deep gorge runs through the mountains. Leutascher Geisterklamm is easy to reach from big cities such as Innsbruck or Munchen. We visited Leutascher Geisterklamm after our morning at the Neuschwanstein Castle.

Up until 2006, the Leutaschklamm has been inaccessible to the public. An EU-funded project made it possible to build a pathway with steel walkways and bridges so the Leutaschklamm is accessible. The kilometres long pathway across the mysterious Leutasch Ghost Gorge twists and turns through magnificent scenery and across a spectacular 800-meter long boardwalk. The Leutaschklamm can be divided into two parts:

1) Leutascher Geisterklamm

There is the ‘Leutascher Geisterklamm’, which is the name for the walking route around the area, covering most of the gorge; This part of the hike contains the Klammgeisterweg of 2,5 kilometers and the Koboldpfad of 2 kilometers. The Klammgeisterweg is where you start if you start the hike from the official parking place on the Austrian border of the gorge. The route takes you along the steel walkways and bridges high above the gorge. Several information boards provide more information about the myths, geology, flora and fauna of the area. In addition, there are some interactive installations and games aimed at the younger ones. The Koboldpfad follows after the Klammgeisterweg and leads you through the forest and covers a bit more height difference. Halfway in this route, there is a small café which also functions as the entrance to the Wasserfallsteig.

2) Leutaschklamm Wasserfallsteig

There is also the ‘Leutaschklamm Wasserfallsteig’, a short walkway to a 23 meter high waterfall inside of the gorge. In our opinion, the most spectacular part of the hike is the Wasserfallsteig. It is just a small portion of the route that leads you to a 23 meter high waterfall inside the gorge. The Wasserfallsteig is on private property so to access this part of the route, you’ll have to pay a small entrance fee of € 2,00 at the café.

When to go?

The Leutasch Gorge is open all year round except when there is heavy snowfall. We did the hike in September with beautiful weather and we saw plenty of people but it was not busy. Most people visit the Leutaschklamm during summer so we would recommend starting the hike at the beginning of the morning or at the end of the day to avoid the biggest crowds.

The entire hike around the Leutaschklamm can be described as suited for the whole family. The hike takes around 2 hours round trip and can be started from either the official parking place in Schanz (Austria) or from the village of Mittenwald (Germany). A parking day-ticket will cost you € 5,00. Alternatively, you can park in Mittenwald or at the parking place “Ins Ried”.

Note: The boardwalk is not suitable for pushchairs, bicycles and dogs, but we saw some families with strollers in the first part of the hike so that should be possible.
