Time to go to Phuket
Crossing the border from Langkawi to Phuket took us some puzzle time but we did it! Why did it take us some time? The ferry service we intended to take from one island to another was not available at this time. So we figured out some other options:
- Ferry from Langkawi back to Penang. There we could take a flight to Phuket;
- Ferry to Satun and then a 15 hour bus ride;
- Flight from Langkawi to Phuket (with a possible layover in Kuala Lumpur).
Traveling from home to Phuket is also quite simple. A lot of airlines offer direct flights to Phuket or a flight with a transfer in Bangkok.
Guesthouse
After figuring out the options the choice was made quickly and we would fly to Phuket. We stayed in the most adorable guesthouse in the Old Town. Na Siam Guesthouse is perfectly upkeep and the staff is really friendly.
Food
The guesthouse does not serve any breakfast but that’s not a problem because just across the street, they serve an amazing breakfast. A little bit further from the guesthouse is the Pancake Corner and Chino Cafe Gallery, also two nice places to eat breakfast.
Scooter
Going from one place to another is best done on a scooter/motor in Phuket. We rented one at our guesthouse and visited a lot of the attractions.
Big Buddha
This complex impressed me so much even though I am not a Buddhist. The dedication these people have is admiring and humbling. Definitely worth a visit if you are in Phuket.
Kathu Waterfalls
I came across these waterfalls after Googling for attractions that were “close” to the Buddha. So we hopped on the scooter and drove to the falls. That was a really good decision because we had some water fun and we shot some nice pictures.
Island Hopping
White beaches and relaxing with a coconut in hand or do you prefer diving, kanoëing or snorkeling. The tour operators in Phuket offer all kinds of trips to choose from. You can go to James Bond Island, Coral Island, Koh Tao etc. We chose to go to Coral Island and spend the day at Banana Beach (not kidding) and went snorkeling. Perfect to relax, eat some food and get a tan.
Kata Beach
Phuket has so many beaches that it is hard to choose. They are all beautiful, with white sand and a blue ocean so depending on your time frame go to more than one or choose the one closest by.
Wat Chalong
Wat Chalong is one of the many temples found on Phuket island. The Wat Chalong temple is the largest temple and is associated with healing because the two former abbots of the temple were known for their knowledge of herbal medicine.
Night Market
The night market is the place to try local food, buy clothes for yourself and souvenirs for back home. I scored some nice sandals and we found a scarf for my mother in law. Don’t forget to try the crêpes with ice cream, they are delicious!
